Meet Al Hall of Baystate Mold Advisors in Southeast
Today we’d like to introduce you to Al Hall.
So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
We started off as a medical office cleaning company when my wife’s uncle asked me if it would like to learn his waterproofing business. With his 50 plus years of business experience in home improvement he trained me in diagnostics of problems in the home. We formed a partnership in 2004 and expanded into the indoor air quality and mold remediation industry. We trained with the National Organization of Mold Remediator’s and Inspectors (www.NORMI.org). I obtained certifications in mold inspection, mold remediation and mold assessment. We have training from Anabec Industries as certified Anabec Applicators of top of the line mold killing and inhibiting products, offering an unprecedented 35 year warranty on no new mold growth on treated areas. We are one of the few companies that offer new construction protection from mold with a 1 time application of our New Build product, a sprayed on product that does not harm raw building materials.
Our goal is to help home and business owners to solve the challenge of finding hidden mold and the toxic off gases they create called mycotoxins. We offer top of the line indoor air quality testing and inspections for mold including measurements of particulates in the air, cultivated samples to identify viable mold spores, bacteria and other fungus growth, thermal imaging for trouble spots, moisture measurements of the air and building materials as well as the aforementioned mycotoxin tests better known as TVOC/TMVOC (Total Volatile Organic Compounds and Total Microbial Organic Compounds) to give as complete a picture as possible of the indoor air quality.
We are always looking into the newer products for mold treatment including natural products as Tea Tree Oil, enzyme treatment and the newer mold stain removers.
When you enjoy your work you never work a day in your life.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
All businesses have growing pains. Keeping previous customers from what we hope is a 1 time event makes residual sales difficult. By being honest about the work helps us get great referrals from our previous customers. Networking with different industries and helping each other out.
Advertising in a changing world. When I grew up print ads was all that was needed. Today as the digital world makes everyone more mobile connected, finding the right media to advertise on is definitely more difficult. From HomeAdvisor, Google, AngiesList, Thumtack, Yelp, Yoddle and the endless list of SEO and digital marketing firms, you can easily spend a lot of money with little return on investment.
Communication with previous customers is very important to stay on the forefront of their minds. When they hear of a problem that is in our wheelhouse, we want them to refer us. But this presents a challenge in balance. None us like junk emails. So we write customers a little letter with something significant or a link to an article on how to protect their homes or businesses using simple maintenance reminders.
Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about Baystate Mold Advisors, LLC – what should we know?
As I have gotten older I have chosen not to get larger in company size. We like to become friends with our customers and pursue what is in their best interest. We offer whole home inspections from basement to attic. We can offer state of the art solutions or the more practical solutions. It really depends on what the customers’ point of view is. Do they want a Mercedes or need a Chevy? However, we will not compromise in ethics. We look at the problem and offer solutions that take care of the immediate concerns and look to the long term prevention of return or new problems. Kind of a belt and suspenders approach. You don’t need both, but we usually offer a redundant or backup design in case of the unexpected. Example, after you remove contaminated building materials and kill the residual mold spores, you don’t need an inhibitor. We will include an inhibitor because that is in your best interest to have a barrier in place to prevent regrowth.
Our small remediation jobs completed with the Anabec products come with an unprecedented 30 year warranty. Our offer to treat new construction raw building material offers up to 50 years of warranty protection backed by the chemical manufacturer, so even if I retire, the protection stays in place.
Our company is known for honesty and ethics. We don’t cut corners nor do we do work that isn’t needed or approved by the customer. This has led us to have great customers and experience.
Is there a characteristic or quality that you feel is essential to success?
Honesty and education. You must have an honest heart in the approach to solving problems and you need continuing education. None of us know it all and advancement in building design and materials requires one to remain current. When we don’t know the answer to a question, we say so. We ask questions and listen intently to the customer. This helps us to be more complete in satisfying the customer’s needs.
Discernment. We have all had bad contractor experiences and all contractors have had difficult clients. This forces all of us to discern if the prospective customer / contractor relationship being considered is a good fit for both. Because of this most of my transactions have been wonderful.
